چکیده

Background & Objectives: The levator veli palatini (LVP) muscle is most commonly reported as the most abnormal muscle in the population with cleft palate and the muscle plays a significant role in velar elevation, and therefore speech production. Methods: This article reviewed the literature focusing on anatomic aspects of the LVP muscle in normal and cleft palate populations and addressed the significant implication of the studies in clinical services for individuals with cleft palate. Results & Conclusion: Literature addressed that abnormal location and volume of the LVP muscle is closely related to velopharyngeal insufficiency and a complete evaluation of the LVP muscle along with the velopharyngeal mechanism is required to provide the most appropriate and effective treatments to individuals with cleft palate. Continuous improvements of MRI technique lead to effective identification of LVP muscle structures and better clinical decision-making for surgical procedures and speech therapy in individuals with cleft palate. Application of levator veli palatini retropositioning combined with Buccinator myomucosal island flap for congenital cleft palate

Congenital cleft palate causes a serious obstacle to children with regard to language and eating function. The aim of the current study was to examine the clinical application of a type of palatoplasty that has a reduced impact on the maxillary growth and good function in velopharyngeal competence. A total of 37 patients with cleft palate were treated with levator veli palatini retropositioning...

A computational model of velopharyngeal closure for simulating cleft palate repair.

The levator veli palatini (LVP) muscle has long been recognized as the muscle that contributes most to velopharyngeal (VP) closure and is therefore of principal importance for restoring normal speech in patients with a cleft palate. Different surgical reconstructive procedures can utilize varying degrees of LVP overlap, and this study developed a new finite-element model of VP closure designed ...

Ultrasound imaging to identify occult submucous cleft palate.

INTRODUCTION The classic submucous cleft palate triad was described by Calnan in 1954. The findings include a bifid uvula, a bony notch in the posterior hard palate, and a furrow along the midline of the soft palate. The furrow represents an area of diastasis of the velopharyngeal muscle sling and is often referred to as the zona pellucida. In 1975, Kaplan first reported on the ‘‘occult’’ submu...

Functional anatomy of the soft palate applied to wind playing.

Wind players must be able to sustain high intraoral pressures in order to play their instruments. Prolonged exposure to these high pressures may lead to the performance-related disorder velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI). This disorder occurs when the soft palate fails to completely close the air passage between the oral and nasal cavities in the upper respiratory cavity during blowing tasks, t...

Microsurgical repair of the soft cleft palate.

A new microsurgical closure of the soft cleft palate was done in ten cases. The essence of the surgical procedure is summarized in three points; 1) a pancaked shaped musculomucosal flap of the soft palate and if necessary mucoperiosteal flap of the hard palate, 2) a whole layer Z-plasty at the palatopharynge:l muscle region, and 3) muscle sling of the levator veli palatini muscle. This surgical...
